Baseball fan honors deceased friend by flushing his ashes down stadium toilets Baseball fan honors deceased friend by flushing his ashes down stadium toilets By Charles Curtis May 2, 2017 3:09 pm Follow @bycharlescurtis By: Charles Curtis | May 2, 2017 3:09 pm Follow @bycharlescurtis We all know there are some unusual ways people honor deceased family members or friends. And that’s totally okay and we’re not here to make fun of anyone, because maybe that’s what the person would have wanted or requested. But let’s file this tale, from the New York Times , under “unorthodox”: New York Mets fan Tom McDonald brings the ashes of his late friend Roy Riegel to ballparks and … well, here’s what happens next: He stepped into a bathroom stall and sprinkled the ashes into the toilet with as much decorum as the setting allowed. A couple of flushes later and Mr. Riegel’s remains were presumably on a journey through Citi Field’s plumbing. “I took care of Roy, and I had to use the facilities myself,” Mr. McDonald said, emerging from the stall with the empty container. “So I figure, you know, kill two birds.” “I always flush in between, though,” he added. “That’s another rule of mine.” Oh, by the way, Riegel was a plumber, and his remains have been flushed at 16 stadiums so far. Besides that fact, the story reveals McDonald and another friend attempted to scatter ashes outside at ballparks, but they ran into some trouble.
